Community Settlement Service: Building Better Futures with Migrants

Inala Community House Community Settlement Service (CSS) provides free settlement support to eligible visa holders from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Our aim is to assist our diverse group of clients in becoming more self-reliant and independent while adjusting to their new lives in Australia.

Meet one of our successful clients, Million Aron Michael:

Hi Million, can you please share with us your background?

Hi, my name is Million. I come from Eritrea and I am 24 years old. I have been in Australia for seven months. I came here to join my parents.

What were your first impressions of Australia? How are you adjusting to your new life here?

I like that Australia has greater opportunities and freedom. I am very thankful for the education that I am receiving through TAFE. Most of all I really love being with my family again because it was hard being separated.

Are you studying or working now?

Yes, I am studying English (AEMP) at TAFE now and I am enjoying it very much. I like the teacher and other students in the class.

What is your ultimate life goal?

I want to become a builder. I am currently looking at getting an apprenticeship in construction to complement my existing experience in carpentry.

How did you learn your carpentry skills?

I previously held a part-time job at a nature woodwork store. I started helping out at the shop by watching and learning bit by bit. Then I started building my own items and pursuing my projects. Very exciting.

What do you like to build and why? How do you source the wood and materials?

I like building interesting items such as TV stands, artistic lamps and other furniture. I really enjoy everything that I make. I get most of my wood from pallets. It is very expensive to buy from Bunnings so I try to source for free or donated wood.

How was your client settlement experience with Inala Community House?
