Community Engagement: Community Football Day

On Saturday 6th October 2018, Inala Community House Community Engagement team helped to organise the “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” Community Football Day hosted by Welcome to Australia (www.welcometoaustralia.org.au).

From 10am to 2pm, the free community sports event was held at Mortimer Road Park (174 Mortimer Rd, Acacia Ridge QLD 4110).

We welcomed families and individuals of all ages and backgrounds to join us for a fun-filled day offering many free exciting sports challenges, free activities and free food and drinks.

We had various stalls in collaboration with different organisations:

  • General Information Stall – distribution of mental health resources in translated languages like Swahili, Somali, Arabic and more to support culturally diverse groups
  • Volleyball Court
  • Obstacle Course Inflatable
  • Basketball Challenge Inflatable
  • Giant Darts Inflatable
  • Football QLD Inflatable Field
  • 10,000 Steps Program – distribution of free activity step trackers and helpful information about 10,000 steps program aimed at mothers
  • Bunnings Pot-Planting – thank you Bunnings for providing the free equipment to encourage gardening
  • Sports Bottle Station – children got to receive free sports bottles, decorate with stickers and fill up throughout the day with supplied water station
  • Brisbane City Council Strawberries Station – free fruits for everyone
  • Lions Inala BBQ – a total of 30kgs worth of free sausages for distribution
  • DJ Fiddy – great music and entertainment
  • Face-Painting by Saha
  • Your Health Record
  • First Aid
  • Drum Circle
  • Zumba by instructor Olga

Everyone had a great time exploring the many inflatables especially the excited children.

Our Community Engagement Manager Haley Kiata teaching the curious children about pot-planting. What a great interactive educational experience about nurturing nature.

Overall the Community Football Day was a great success as we got to raise community awareness about positive mental health by being physically and socially active.

This event was part of Queensland Mental Health Week (6-16 October 2018) www.qldmentalhealthweek.org.au, to value mental health with the following six steps:

  1. Be active – do what you can, enjoy what you do, get moving and improve your mood
  2. Keep learning – embrace new experiences, recognise opportunities, surprise yourself
  3. Connect – talk, listen, be there
  4. Give – your time, your words, your presence
  5. Take notice – remember the simple things that give you joy
  6. Care for our planet – it’s the home we all share
