On Thursday 26th April 2018, Inala Community House Healthy Ageing Program (Acacia Ridge) organised a free “Introduction to Tablets” workshop, available to all local seniors.

Acacia Ridge Centre Coordinator, Larissa

“This free workshop was brought-in after I realised some of our senior members own a tablet, yet they lack the confidence and knowledge to use this device to its full capacity. We have many senior members who can use computers and some are actively online, so we thought of taking it up a notch and helping them to access internet on the go, adding that extra layer of convenience on a day-to-day basis,” said our Healthy Ageing Program (Acacia Ridge) Coordinator, Larissa Vaiomanu.

We sincerely thank staff members, Joanna & Luke from Brisbane City Council’s Sunnybank Hills for their time visiting our Acacia Ridge Centre and enlighten our senior members to this new gadget, enabling them to delve further into the digital world.

“The Council has introduced computer classes and technology related workshops since the mid 90’s. Since then, we have continually adjusted our curriculum to follow the fast-paced nature of this industry, making sure everyone is up-to-date with the latest gadgets and trends.

The need to go mobile is ever increasing nowadays, so it is paramount for local seniors to have the technical know-how on using tablets as well. I am very pleased to help out and we look forward to the invitation to come back with more intricate and advanced topics,” said Luke from Brisbane City Council’s Sunnybank Hills.

Proudly sponsored by Telstra and the State Government, this free and informative session was held at 12 noon – 2pm and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The council staff came equipped with several tablets for those who came in without one. The subjects encompassed: how to use the touchscreen, connecting to the internet, adding apps and other useful programs. Our participants felt more empowered using this electronic tool and will undoubtedly have no trouble connecting to the free wi-fi wherever they go.

“I am quite knowledgeable about using the computer at home but nowhere near as comfortable with touchscreens and/or apps. This is a very informative session and now I know the difference between iPad and Android, and now, Bluetooth!” said by one of our senior members, Trevor.

Following the workshop, the event ended with a brunch provided by the Centre and shared for everyone to enjoy.
