‘My Place’ Family Day Care: National Simultaneous Storytime Playgroup

On Wednesday 22nd May 2019, ‘My Place’ Family Day Care held a National Simultaneous Storytime Playgroup for our Educators and children.

From 9am, the Playgroup was held at ‘Our Place’ Hall (corner of Japonica and Robinia streets, Inala QLD).

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

For 2019 National Simultaneous Storytime, we read Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove!

The book follows Macca and his pal Al through a talent contest, but what will their act be? Will they shimmy and shake? Dance and prance? Whatever they choose, it will surely be a performance to remember.

We had a morning of fun sensory activities including “make-your-own” maracas using paper cups, paint and rice. After that, it was great musical fun as children played their maracas combined with other instruments. Shake, shake, shake it!

‘My Place’ Family Day Care joined over one million young people from Australia and New Zealand to read the same book on the same day at exactly the same time – 11am. How exciting!

This is our second year celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime. It is a great occasion to encourage children to start reading from a young age and we especially love this year’s story! Thank you everyone for joining us today – we had a really great turnout.” our Playgroup Coordinator Britt Quince said.

Every participating child received a certificate for reading. All children went home at the end of the day with their own maraca, a certificate and a good story about Alpacas with Maracas!

We also held a special Morning Tea to congratulate our Coordinator Jodie on the upcoming birth of her new baby. Everyone was welcome and brought a plate of food to share.
