Community Engagement: MyMarathon Challenge by Heart Foundation

For the month of October, MyMarathon encouraged all Australians to complete a 42.2km marathon in any way that challenged them, while raising money to fight heart disease. Whether it took 4 hours, 4 days or 4 weeks, you can decide your own pace, place and method to complete the challenge. You can do it on your own or even create a team with your family, friends or co-workers.

On Wednesday 31st October 2018, Inala Community House Community Engagement team participated in a final celebration for the achievement of Inala Elders and the general community in completing Heart Foundation’s MyMarathon (www.mymarathon.com.au).

The celebration was open to the public at Inala Indigenous Health Service (37 Wirraway Parade, Inala QLD 4077).

Everyone was first welcomed at the sign-in booth.

There were free water bottles, sunscreen, caps, capes and helpful information about heart health.

Ready, set, go!

After registration, we started a group walking tour around the Inala Civic Centre to symbolise the final leg of MyMarathon. We did it!

Everyone had their capes, hats and comfortable shoes on, while walking and chatting away. It was a beautiful sunny day and the walk was remarkably peaceful and joyous.

After the group walk, everyone reconvened back at Inala Indigenous Health Service for a light lunch and refreshments.

Each participant also got to receive a free goodie bag by Heart Foundation containing a $10 heart-shaped compact mirror, a heart-shaped pendant, a red heart pin and helpful information on the importance of maintaining good heart health.

Inala Community House would like to thank the following organisers for such a great community event in Inala:

  • Heart Foundation
  • Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (DATSIP)
  • Inala Elders

On behalf of Inala Community House, I feel privileged to be invited to celebrate the completion of MyMarathon with our Inala community. It is fantastic to have the support of Heart Foundation and Inala Indigenous Health Service to shed light on heart health for our indigenous groups and the general community as a whole,” said our Community Engagement Manager Haley Kiata.
