Community Engagement: Happy International Women’s Day

On Friday 6th March 2020, Inala Community House Community Engagement team co-hosted an International Women’s Day celebration alongside Self Help Queensland to raise awareness in our community.

International Women’s Day aims to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

From 11am, we welcomed all to join our free event at our Acacia Ridge centre (29 Chardean Street, Acacia Ridge QLD).

The event started with an Acknowledgement of Country by our Community Engagement Manager Haley Kiata.

Coming from a long line of strong women, I am honoured to be joined today by a roomful of inspirational women who make positive changes every day. Today we pay special tribute to women who care for those living with disabilities,” Haley said.

Selina speaking.

Good morning everyone, thank you for coming today. Self Help Queensland provides support for more than 500 support groups across Queensland. We can help you to start, facilitate and find support groups to improve your health and wellbeing. Support groups are vital to our community where you can meet, debrief and share unique issues you are going through with people who can relate and understand,” Self Help Queensland Coordinator Selina Utting said.

We have a presentation today providing useful information to help women and their children with special needs. We are thrilled to invite three panellists to share their unique life stories advocating for their children with disabilities ranging from mild autism to more complex cases. I have worked with exceptional migrant mums who deal with complex challenges of not just being a woman, a mum, a mum with children of special needs and a refugee in a new country. We hope today’s stories can inspire other women to join or even form their own support groups,” Self Help Queensland Project Officer Seble Tadesse said.

Free drinks and lunch were provided for all.

Today’s great event was a partnership between Self Help Queensland and Inala Community House.
