Staying active and healthy for seniors!

Healthy ageing is important and here at Inala Community House, we love the seniors in our community. It is part of our mission to ensure the seniors are happy, healthy and staying connected. We did some research and talked to our Community Engagement team to pull together our top tips for staying active and healthy as a senior.

Keep moving

Physical exercise is important at any age, but even more so as you get older. Make sure you’re keeping active and your body moving. This doesn’t mean you have to be in training for a marathon… it’s all about taking small actions to keep your body moving. That could be taking your dog for a walk, opting for the stairs instead of a lift, or coming along to one of the Konga classes at our neighbourhood centres. We have special exercise classes that are fun and energetic, but also incorporate low impact activity.

Get a good sleep

You can’t put a price on a good nights sleep! Sleep gives your body time to rest, recover and recuperate for the next day. Make sure you’re prioritizing your rest and giving yourself the best chance for the day.

Keep up to date with your doctor

Regular health check ups become even more important as you get older. These regular visits help to monitor ongoing conditions and can catch anything nasty early! Remember to put your health first and make regular appointments

Take care of your mental health

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and it is vital that you look after that too! Social isolation and loneliness can increase in seniors. Make sure to keep your social calendar full too, whether that is catching up with friends, visiting your family, or coming to lunch or an event at the neighbourhood centre. The door is always open.

Find yourself a hobby

Finding yourself a hobby or activity you like is a great way to keep busy and connect with others. You could join a choir, a walking group or even check out the healthy ageing program calendar. There is something for everyone and often involves a cup of tea afterwards – what more could you want?

There you have it! Our top five tips for seniors to stay active and healthy. Inala Community House also offers our Healthy Ageing Program, a service dedicated for all seniors in our community. The Healthy Ageing Program is carefully designed to help improve overall wellbeing including physical, mental and social aspects. Join the fun, enjoy the activities and make lifelong friends.
